Pearly Queen & Pearly King on Flickr.Saw these two “pearlies” on Park Lane yesterday. Pearly Queens and Pearly Kings are a very London institution. Pearlies began in 19th-century. The Coster Kings and Queens were the elected leaders of costermongers on London’s streets (“costards” meaning “apples”, and “mongers” meaning “sellers”). As London comes under such scrutiny this year - with the celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years on the throne, and the Olympics and Paralympics - it’s lovely to see many traditions being upheld among all the new developments in the city. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearly_Kings_and_Queens
